
SKD11 Cold Work Tool Steel
Superior Material Composition
SKD11 combines high carbon (1.40-1.60%), chromium (11-13%), and vanadium (0.15-0.50%) to deliver outstanding wear resistance and edge retention. Its high chromium content also provides mild corrosion resistance in hardened conditions.
Heat Treatment & Machinability
As an air-hardening steel, SKD11 achieves a hardness range of 55-62 HRC after heat treatment, with minimal distortion during hardening. While machinable in the annealed state, alternatives like A2 steel (5% chromium) are recommended for improved machinability in less demanding applications.
Versatile Applications
Ideal for high-stress tooling, SKD11 is commonly used in cold work dies, precision stamping tools, shear blades, and wear-resistant components like bearings and gauges. Its balanced toughness and durability make it a top choice for industrial cutting and forming operations.

1.Overview
JIS SKD11 is a high-carbon, high-chromium, and high-vanadium tool steel widely used in manufacturing cutting tools, molds, and dies. Known for its exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, it excels in applications demanding extreme abrasion resistance and precision cutting performance.

5.Heat Treatment
Forging Temperature: 1050-900°C (1922-1652°F). Avoid forging below 850°C (1562°F).
Annealing: Heat to 800-850°C, slow cool to 500°C (furnace cooling rate ≤30°C/h). Hardness ≤255 HB.
Quenching: Oil or air cooling. Recommended temperature: 1000-1050°C (1832-1922°F).
Tempering: 150-550°C (302-1022°F). Post-tempering hardness: 58-62 HRC. Double tempering (1-2 hours each) is recommended.
6.Applications
Cold Work Tools: Stamping dies, shear blades, precision punching dies.
Wear-Resistant Components: Bearings, guide rails, high-precision gauges.
Plastic Molds: Injection mold cavities requiring high hardness and wear resistance.
Others: Cold rolling rolls, thread rolling tools, cutting tools.
7.Delivery condition
For hot forged or hot rolled bar, usually the delivery condition is hot forged or rolled, annealed, rough turned.
For hot forged plate, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, annealed, milled surface.
For hot rolled plate, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed, black surface.
