ASTM A2/Cr5Mo1V Cold Work Tool Steel

Excellent wear resistance and hardness
ASTM A2's high carbon and chromium-molybdenum alloy design gives it excellent wear resistance and compressive strength. After quenching, the hardness can reach 60-62 HRC, which is suitable for high wear environments (such as stamping dies, shear blades). Its uniform carbide distribution further extends tool life and reduces maintenance frequency, which is particularly suitable for industrial scenarios that require long-term stability.
Flexible heat treatment process
ASTM A2 supports a variety of heat treatment schemes: the one-time hardening method (1020-1040°C quenching + low temperature tempering) can achieve high hardness (HRC ≥ 60), while the medium temperature quenching (1050°C) combined with high temperature tempering (500-520°C) balances hardness and toughness, reduces processing stress, and is suitable for precision wire cutting and titanium plating, significantly improving the overall performance of the mold.
Wide range of applications
From cold working dies (such as punches, drawing dies) to cutting tools (drills, taps), ASTM A2 has shown excellent performance. Its high toughness is also suitable for parts that withstand impact (such as hot pressing molds, wear-resistant guide rails), covering the automotive, electronics, hardware and other industries, combining economy and versatility.

ASTM STM A2/JIS SKD12 Cold Worked Tool Steel

cold work tool steel

1. ASTM A2 Tool Steel Introduction

ASTM A2 is an air-cooled hardening cold working die steel, a high-carbon, high-chromium alloy tool steel known for its excellent wear resistance, toughness and heat treatment stability. Its chemical composition includes carbon (0.95-1.05%), chromium (4.75-5.50%), molybdenum (0.90-1.40%) and vanadium (0.15-0.50%). By optimizing the alloy ratio, it achieves high hardness and wear resistance, suitable for high-load cold working dies and cutting tools. After quenching and tempering, the hardness can reach 60-62 HRC, and the deformation is very small, which is especially suitable for mold manufacturing with complex geometries. ASTM A2 is widely used in die-casting dies, blanking dies, cold extrusion tools and precision tools. It has high strength and processing convenience, and is an ideal choice for medium and large-scale production.

5. ASTM A2 Tool Steel Heat Treatment

Stress relieving

After heavy grinding or machine it is advisable to stress relieve tool steel A2 to reduce the danger of cracking or distortion during subsequent heat treatments. Heat slowly to 670-700°C, soak for a minimum of two hours per 25mm of section then cool down in the furnace.

Annealing

To prevent decarburization use a controlled atmosphere furnace or pack in a sealed container using some inert material. To anneal A2 tool steel for lowest hardness, heat slowly to 899°C(1650°F) and hold at this temperature for about two hours per inch of greatest cross-section. Cool steel A2 at a rate of 20°F (10°C) per hour to 650°C (1200°F) and reheat to 732°C (1350°F); hold 3 hours per inch of greatest cross-section; furnace cool at 20 degrees per hour to 593°C (1100°F); then furnace-cool to 482°C (900°F) and air-cool.

Hardening

    Preheating temperature: 1200–1380°F (650–750°C). Austenitizing temperature: 1700 –1780°F (925–970°C) but usually 1720–1760°F (940–960°C).

Tempering

Choose the tempering temperature according to the hardness required by reference to the tempering graph.

Heat uniformly and thoroughly to the desired temperature and hold for 25 minutes per cm of thickness. Tool steel A2 can be double tempering, after intermediate cooling to room temperature. Temper at 200°C for a balance of hardness and strength or 350°C where strength is more important than hardness. A minimum holding time of 2 hours per inch of greatest cross-section should be used.

Quenching

Martempering bath or fluidized bed at 360–430°F (180–220°C) or 840–1020°F (450–550°C) then cool in air

    Circulating air or atmosphere

Vacuum furnace with overpressure of gas at cooling

Oil (only for small and uncomplicated tools)
